AAMRNet’s Pre-Budget Submission on AMR Action Package

Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (AAMRNet) has lodged its 2026-27 pre-budget submission to the Commonwealth Treasury calling for much needed investment in an AMR Action Package.

AAMRNet is MTPConnect’s AMR initiative providing thought leadership and driving action on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Australia.

We know that AMR could be responsible for as many as 5000 Australians dying each year. Compounding the problem is Australia’s limited access to antibiotics that are already available in other parts of the world such as the US and EU.

AAMRNet’s submission outlines a sensible and impactful four-year AMR action package. If supported, it will not only help protect Australia and its neighbours from the escalating AMR crisis, it will also support early-stage AMR innovators and position us as a global and regional leader in the field.

The four interlinked and complementary initiatives covered in the submission are:

1. Support the continued operation and expansion of AAMRNet to provide ecosystem building and thought leadership on AMR policy in Australia, and representation on key international groups such as the World Health Organization Civil Society Task Force on AMR.

2. Establish an AMR-focused accelerator in Australia; to support and translate innovation, mentor and upskill Australian researchers, and help strengthen and sustain the pipeline of new antimicrobial technologies.

3. Invest in a pilot subscription fund for novel antimicrobials to ensure Australians have equitable access to the latest life-saving antibiotics.

4. Support regional preparedness and resilience against AMR through innovation and ensuring equitable access to antimicrobials in the Pacific region.

The passion and commitment of the Australian AMR community is undeniable – and given the last dedicated AMR-focused Australian Government budget measure expired in June 2024, there’s never been a better time for the Australian Government time to get behind our researchers and innovators and back AAMRNet’s sensible AMR action package.
