South Australia celebrates innovation and empowerment at APPLAUSE24

South Australia’s health and medical innovation sector celebrated a year of achievements at the APPLAUSE24 event last week.

The gathering brought together over 250 innovators, entrepreneurs, leaders, researchers, and healthcare providers, representing more than 60 industries, 15 government bodies, and multiple institutions.

The stand-out event, organised by MTPConnect’s Adelaide Intermediary Program (AIP) together with ecosystem partners including AusBiotech, Medical Device Partnering Program with Flinders University, Health Translation SA, University of Adelaide, and the University of South Australia, centered around the theme of #EMPOWERMENT, aiming to inspire collaboration and collective strength within the sector.

The evening’s Master of Ceremonies Dr. Michelle Perugini, former co-founder of Presagen and newly appointed Head of Commercialisation and CEO of UniSA Ventures encouraged new connections among attendees.

Speaking to the group, Michelle Gregory, Novartis Australia & New Zealand Government Relations and Public Policy Manager, emphasised the critical role of partnerships in healthcare, highlighting the need for collaboration between government, healthcare providers, and innovative organisations to improve patient outcomes.

The Minister for Health and Wellbeing in South Australia, the Hon Chris Picton, MP, expressed confidence in the state’s robust healthcare sector. He emphasised the importance of attracting and retaining top talent in innovation and technology to advance healthcare delivery using technologies like artificial intelligence and integrated electronic medical records to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs.

Before MTPConnect Chair Hon Jaala Pulford launched Celebration Reel, she shared some impressive highlights of the AIP’s impact as an intermediary. In just three years, the program has connected with 500 organisations and 1,800 individuals, facilitated 730 business connections, and trained 758 stakeholders in commercialisation capabilities. Additionally, the AIP has identified 80 funding opportunities, supporting over $39 million in funding for South Australia, and hosted more than 90 events to foster sector growth.

Michelle Gregory from Novartis, highlighted how Australia’s healthcare innovations are transforming patient care by providing tailored, effective treatments developed locally. She spoke about the benefits of empowering patients and leveraging local expertise to build a more resilient healthcare ecosystem that can deliver meaningful solutions and improve health outcomes for all Australians.

APPLAUSE24 featured various networking opportunities, including the CMAX Clinical Research Lounge, Radium Capital Cocktail Bar, and FB Rice’s Ice Cream Cart. Entertainment was provided by the His ‘n’ Hers 3-piece jazz band, while a 360-degree video booth captured memorable moments throughout the night.
